    Our team had to deliver a computer vision solution allowing tracing vehicles on the construction site. Cognitum was responsible for all application aspects except for the detection model.

    Since it was necessary to recognize car models and read plates in any weather conditions (bright sunlight, rain, snow when camera could not work properly), and the numbers themselves could be dirty, not at the right angle, some details could be completely missing so the main challenge of the project was the right algorithms for recognition. These algorithms must be high level and the model must be well trained and sensitive.

    Solution

    There were ready-made solutions for face recognition on the market, but there was no application for optical recognition with the functions that the client needed. Besides, it was important to take into account the specific features of the construction site. The system had to know, distinguish all models of specific vehicles such as excavators, concrete mixers or loaders and identify all their possible shapes and sizes.

    This Progressive Web App recorded and processed data on incoming cars (model of this vehicle, registration number, etc), saving the time they stayed at the site. The application works in two modes: automatic and semi-automatic. If the system identified a particular car and found it in the list, then it could proceed to the construction site. If the vehicle was allowed to enter but the maximum number of cars was already on the site, then the system let a new one to pass only when the previous car had left. If the vehicle was not on the list, then the semi-automatic mode worked: the operator who received the notification could skip or reject the transport.
